SAVANNAH, GA ( July 22, 2011) Less than a week after Jeffery Smith was found shot to death on Savannah’s Westside, one man is in custody charged with his murder.
July 20, 5 p.m., Police were called to Ogeechee Road near the 37th Street connector, after receiving calls of an accident. They found an accident but also discovered 47-year-old Jeffery Smith was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Memorial University Medical Center where he later died. Inside of Smith’s truck officers found a plastic bag with more than 60 grams of cocaine and scales.
Throughout their investigation, detectives were able to determine that Smith was in the process of completing a drug transaction with Eric RILEY, 27. An altercation occurred and turned violent. Smith was shot and sped off.
Tonight, RILEY has been charged with murder. This is an ongoing investigation; as a result, additional arrests may be forthcoming.
