SAVANNAH, GA (August 31, 2012) Three juveniles are in custody after crashing a stolen car then trying to outrun police on foot Thursday evening.
The three 15-year-olds were in a car stolen in a robbery at Forsyth Park Wednesday evening when they tried to elude Metro patrol officers from the Islands and Central precincts and drove into an intensive surveillance operation by Central Precinct Crime Suppression officers.
The gold Toyota Camry they were driving failed to negotiate a turn off East 63rd Street onto the northbound lanes of Abercorn and skidded into the southbound lanes, colliding with two cars.
All three occupants ran but were headed off by a pursuing officer and then found themselves surrounded by responding patrol and CSU officers. A handgun reported stolen in 2009 was found in an adjacent yard.
The suspect determined to be the driver was charged with theft by receiving (auto), obstruction by fleeing, fleeing to elude police, failure to obey traffic control devices and driving without a license. The others are being held as the investigation continues.
The surveillance operation was part of the Central Precinct “All Hands On Deck” operation held to address the customary summer crime increase.
The Toyota had been stolen about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday near Forsyth Park when two women standing beside it were approached by two black males who brandished a firearm and robbed them of their purses and the Camry.
