SAVANNAH, GA (November 23, 2011): A joy ride in a stolen car left running in a parking lot left Southside Precinct patrol officers scrambling to three crimes scenes, two people with minor injuries and one man and a juvenile in custody Tuesday night.
Troy Shanta Young, 18, of the 100 block of West 51st Street was arrested after police followed him into a restaurant and scuffled to take him into custody. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction, and theft by receiving stolen property. He was on probation for burglary.
A 15-year-old boy who also bailed out of the stolen car was taken into custody a block away and charged with auto theft and obstruction and detained in the Chatham County Juvenile Detention Center.
A passenger in another car received minor injuries when the Monte Carlo collided with it and drove away. And a police officer was checked for injuries after a taser fired by a colleague in the scuffle struck his arm instead of the suspect.
It all started just after 6 p.m. when Police were called to a daycare center on the 8900 block of White Bluff Road when a man reported his white Chevrolet Monte Carlo had been stolen from the parking lot. He had left it running while he went into the center to pick up two children.
Reports of the hit and run collision at Hodgson Memorial and Eisenhower drives came in moments later at 6:33 p.m. and two males were viewed leaving the Monte Carlo in a nearby shopping center parking lot. A tipster directed police to CiCi’s Pizza where Young was found walking out of a restroom without the yellow shirt he had been wearing. In the scuffle to arrest him, the taser was fired. Police found a pistol and an ammunition magazine in his clothing. The juvenile was arrested in a parking lot on the 7600 block of Abercorn Street.
Southside Precinct detectives are continuing the investigation.
