SAVANNAH, GA. (April 26, 2014): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are investigating an early-morning head-on collision of two cars that sent two people to a hospital and closed the highway to Tybee Island for almost three hours Saturday morning.
Matthew Potter, 31, of an Oemler Court West address, was extricated from the wreckage of the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving by Southside Fire and Tybee Island Fire departments and transported to Memorial University Medical Center with serious injuries after the 4:10 a.m. crash. A male passenger in the Jetta was transported with complaints of injury.
Allen James Burnett, 25, of a South Millwood Road address, escaped injury when the Dodge Charger he was driving collided with the Volkswagen just east of the Bull River Bridge on East U.S. Highway 80.
Traffic on the highway was shut down by Metro and Tybee Island police until about 7:15 a.m.
The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) continues to investigate the crash.
