Savannah – The Savannah Police Department reminds the City of Savannah of the upcoming reactivation of school zone speed cameras for the 2026-2027 school year.
All school cameras will be active on Aug. 3 but will only issue warnings for a two-week period. Starting on Aug. 17, citations will be issued with fines.
Cameras will operate 45 minutes before school begins, remain active throughout the official school day, and deactivate 30 minutes after dismissal. This aligns with state law, which permits enforcement from one hour before instructional hours begin until one hour after they end.
Cameras are only active on school days, no citations will be issued on holidays, weekends, or emergency closure days (e.g., storm days).
Per Georgia law, violations will be enforced based upon ten miles per hour over the reduced speed limit when a reduction for the speed limit for a school zone is in effect and ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit for the school zone when no reduced speed limit is in effect.
Initial violations are $75.00 for a first violation and $125.00 for a second or any subsequent violation, in addition to fees associated with the electronic processing of such civil monetary penalty which shall not exceed $10.00.
Since citations are classified as civil rather than criminal, no points are placed on driver records, and insurance is not affected.
