SAVANNAH, GA (August 16, 2012) A Savannah truck driver was trapped for several minutes but escaped critical injury when his tractor-trailer rig overturned on an Interstate 516 ramp this morning.
David Williams, 45, was transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries after the 9:30 a.m. accident.
The tanker he was driving east on Gwinnett Street attempted to turn right on the I-516 entrance ramp when the tanker rig overturned onto its left side beside the ramp.
Savannah Fire secured the scene and assured the cargo of the 65,000 gallon tanker consisted of non-hazardous material before extricating the driver from the cab. None of the contents spilled.
The ramp was closed for several hours for the transfer of cargo and fuel, removal of the tractor-trailer and Metro investigation.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) continues to investigate.
