SAVANNAH, GA (August 20, 2015) –The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, in conjunction with the FBI and GBI investigated a possible threat on a local movie theater.
The alleged threat was spread on social media and was intercepted by local law enforcement. The SCMPD’s intelligence unit and violent crimes investigators, along with investigators from the GBI and FBI ran down information associated with the alleged threat.
Investigators identified the alleged potential offender who does not reside in Chatham County, Georgia. That individual was interviewed. The individual cooperated with investigators.
During the course of this investigation, NO evidence has been obtained to date indicating the existence of a credible threat. The investigation also revealed that at no time was a specific movie theater the target of anyone intending to do harm. Investigators are looking into the possibility that this incident was an internet form of “swatting,” which has heightened fear senselessly across the country.
