For the second consecutive day, Metro Islands Precinct officers combed the area around an east Savannah cemetery today in search of body remains that were stolen from the cemetery Monday night.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were called to the cemetery on Wheaton Street just before 10 a.m. by cemetery employees who found two caskets out of their vaults. One had been damaged, but not opened. A second casket was opened and the body removed.
The body was that of a woman who died in 2001.
Aided by a dog specially trained to find bodies, police searched the cemetery grounds, surrounding areas, Truman Parkway homeless camps and storm water canals. Metro also used police helicopter Eagle 3, Islands Precinct officers, detectives and Crime Suppression Unit officers, Downtown Precinct officers and SCMPD canines..
Police are asking anyone who has information on the theft or the whereabouts of the body to call Islands Precinct investigators at (912) 898-3252.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at (912) 234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
