SAVANNAH, GA (March 10, 2016): At the request of Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police, the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) has launched an investigation into a fatal vehicular accident on Harmon Street and Maupus Avenue that claimed the life of a Bernitha Vaughn, 69, just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9.
Vaughn was driving south on Harmon Street. Kareem Felder, 20, was driving west on Maupus Avenue. Felder struck Vaughn’s car, fatally injuring her on impact. Felder ran away from the scene. He was apprehended by SCMPD after a brief foot chase.
Felder was under surveillance by Metro’s Undercover Narcotics Investigations Team (UNIT). Minutes before the fatal collision, Felder pulled into a carwash at Victory Drive and Skidaway Road, where UNIT detectives approached his car on foot. Felder fled from the carwash, eventually colliding with Vaughn’s vehicle.
Investigators are working to determine the facts related to the surveillance and any other actions taken by Metro officers and the perpetrator. This incident remains under investigation by GSP.
