SAVANNAH, GA (October 4, 2013): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Central Precinct Tactical Investigations Unit, Crime Suppression Unit and SWAT Team joined forces to arrest five suspects on drug and weapon related charges, this morning.
Just after 11a.m., Central Precinct detectives served warrants at two residences on the 500 block of Seiler Avenue, including two high risk warrants aided by SWAT. Detectives confiscated four guns and three grams of crack cocaine from the first residence, where the suspects were taken into custody. The second warrant was served at a vacant property, containing various types of drug paraphernalia.
The investigation steamed from complaints of heavy drug activity on the block during the summer months.
Individuals taken into custody include: Jerrod Garrett ( DOB 06/03/83), charged with four counts of sale of a controlled substance, and two counts of attempt to violate Georgia’s Controlled Substance Act; Rashawn Singleton (DOB 04/27/1982), charged with five counts of sale of controlled substance and felony probation violation; James Wright (DOB 10/19/1963) charged with possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute; Dennis Lewis (DOB 08/13/1958), charged probation violation and contempt of court; and Mae Prescott (DOB 04/26/1944), charged with four counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, and possession of a drug related object.
These arrests were a continuation of the Summer 2013 “All Hands on Deck” operation, where Central Precinct commander, Capt. DeVonn Adams called for strategic placement of officer’s leave requests, to allow higher police presence during periods when crime traditionally spikes.
Adams stated, “This operation was intended to run from June until the end of August. After seeing its success, we decided to keep it going year-round.” Adams added, “We’re committed to keeping our community safe. We’ll do whatever it takes.”
