SAVANNAH, GA. (February 21, 2014): A warrant operation today led by the Central Precinct Tactical Investigation Unit and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department SWAT Team led to the arrest of at least three individuals and the seizure of illegal drugs.
The raid, dubbed Operation Sungazer, followed six weeks of undercover operations by the TIU that led to search warrants being obtained for the two residences and arrest warrants for a number of suspects. Joining in the afternoon operation were Central Precinct Patrol officers and Crime Suppression Units from Central and Southside precincts.
Joshua McNear, one of the subjects sought in the operation, was one of those arrested. He is a twice-convicted felon who was served with five warrants today. Investigators continue to search each location and to question several people detained.
Police also discovered one of the houses was being used illegally as a boarding house. City of Savannah Code Enforcement Officers were called in to investigate as well.
day’s operation in the Cuyler/Brownsville neighborhood was the third in recent months led by the Central TIU as officers focus on drug sales and violent crimes that frequent the area.
“We have moved deliberately and methodically through this neighborhood to lay the groundwork for today’s operation,” said Capt. DeVonn Adams, commander of the Central Precinct. “We have confirmed reports from members of the neighborhood that drug sales are conducted in these houses by these suspect and those sales lead to violent crimes against members of the community. Those neighbors have asked for our help and have aided our efforts to keep this community safe.”
Central detectives continue to investigate the scenes and more charges and arrests could be filed.
