SAVANNAH,GA ( April 27, 2012) Savannah’s Riverfront will take on a different appearance beginning Wednesday when preparations begin for the Savannah Tall Ships Challenge.
River Street and all ramps accessing it will be closed Friday-Sunday, May 4-6, as 14 sailing ships as long as 295 feet and as high as 147 feet berth on both sides of the river for the event. But preparations will affect some vehicle and foot traffic beginning Wednesday.
The north side of River Street will be gated from the Barnard Street Ramp to the Hyatt Hotel and from the east side of the ferry landing to East Broad Street to all but ticket-bearing pedestrians. The water taxi landing will be open at all times.
On the north end of the river, gating will be erected from the west side of the Savannah Convention and Trade Center to the east side of International Drive.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will be closing all access to River Street from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. all three days of the event. Delivery vehicles to the businesses on River Street will be required to be out of the area before those times.
Visitors are encouraged to use the Convention center parking lot on the north side of the river and use the water taxis to cross the river.
