SAVANNAH, GA (January 18, 2011): Multiple subjects have been detained and a stolen car recovered after a series of armed robberies Monday night and this morning.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police recovered the blue, 2008 Toyota Camry reported stolen last week after passers-by who saw it speed into a lane directed police to it.
Members of the SCMPD Neighborhood Task Force had been searching for the Camry and spotted it, but were unable to stop it. As the Camry sped away it turned into the lane between 37th and 38th Streets.
A detective, directed into the lane by a resident of the area, found the Camry in the back yard of a rooming house and interviewed occupants of the house before taking them in for additional questioning. Firearms were recovered as well.
“We feel this was an important event, because the robberies were occurring with greater frequency,” said Gerry Long, Criminal Investigations Division Commander. “I commend our officers for great police work, but the information provided by neighbors in the area made it all possible.”
Police are looking into two armed robberies on the Southside and three in the Cuyler-Brownsville area in an attempt to determine which subject were involved in each. In each of those cases, victims described a blue Toyota with varying numbers of occupants. The victims were threatened with at least one firearm and, in two cases, victims were struck in the face.
The investigation could expand to other crimes as well.
