SAVANNAH, GA (February 16, 2012): Streets will be closed for several hours in west Savannah on Saturday for the Founders Day Parade celebrating the foundation of the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The Sixth District covers the some 700 churches in the state of Georgia.
The parade, hosted by St. Phillips Monumental AME Church, features 200 units, 30 floats and about 1,500 participants and begins at 10 a.m. at the May Street YMCA and ends at the same location about 1 p.m.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will be closing streets for the parade from 10 a.m. until the parade concludes. The staging area on May Street will be closed from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. to facilitate the parade and block party scheduled afterward.
It travels south on May Street to Anderson Street, east on Anderson to MLK Jr.
Boulevard, south on MLK to 37th Street, east on 37th to Montgomery, north on Montgomery to Gwinnett and west on Gwinnett Street back to May Street, where it disbands.
