5/14/2020 Update: Yesterday afternoon, an arrest was made in the April 7th homicide of Roderick Matthews, 20. Throughout the course of this investigation, intelligence was gathered on a possible suspect, who was later identified as Kelvin Waye, 21. Once identified, SPD’s Homicide Unit, Gang Unit, Violent Crimes Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force began working together to locate him.

With assistance from the aforementioned units as well as SPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Hostage Negotiation Team, Chatham County Aviation and the Port Wentworth Police Department, Waye was apprehended on Tiller Way in Port Wentworth yesterday, without incident. He was charged with murder and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.

SAVANNAH, GA (April 8, 2020) – Savannah Police Violent Crimes detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man on Emerald Drive yesterday afternoon.

At around 7:30 p.m., officers responded to Emerald Drive after receiving a ShotSpotter notification. Once officers arrived on scene, they located Roderick Matthews, 20, with a gunshot wound. Medical personnel responded to the scene to render aid, but he succumbed to his injuries.
