SAVANNAH, GA (May 25, 2016): Savannah-Chatham Police Department will graduate 24 citizens from its Spring Citizens Police Academy on May 26 at 7 p.m.
The 13-week program allows residents to interact with members of the police department and the criminal justice community. Participants learn the unique job functions of officers representing each Metro unit and the various local agencies with whom they collaborate. The academy included tours of the Chatham County Jail, 911 Communication Center, firearm and tactical training, traffic stop role playing exercises and a ride-along with patrol officers.
“We are excited and very proud of our graduates. Our hope is that these citizens utilize their experiences to encourage others in the community to build the same types of relationships with the police,” says Gianna Nelson, Coordinator for the Citizens Police Academy.
Graduates will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible to apply to the Volunteers in Policing Program in support of SCMPD.
The graduation ceremony will take place at SCMPD’s Professional Development Center, located at 3401 Edwin Street.
