UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as James Coughlin, 56, who was reported missing to Collier County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office in March 2016. He was positively identified through dental records. His remains are being sent to an anthropologist to determine a cause of death, which appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
SAVANNAH, GA (Saturday, August 19, 2017) – Savannah-Chatham Metro’s Violent Crimes detectives continue an investigation into human remains discovered today in a wooded area off of Gateway Boulevard.
Officers were called to an area in the first block of E. Gateway Boulevard about 11:30 a.m. after someone reported the discovery. Violent Crimes detectives also responded to the scene and confirmed the finding were human.
Detectives believe the remains could be a suicidal man who was reported missing in 2016 out of Naples, Fla. Authorities in Naples told Metro soon after he was reported missing that he could be in the area near today’s discovery. Naples investigators and Metro officers searched the area unsuccessfully.
Detectives are continuing to work with Naples authorities to make a positive identification. The remains have been submitted to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for further testing.
