SAVANNAH, GA  (July 21, 2011) Savannah-Chatham metro Police are warning citizens of a texting scam.

SCMPD Financial Crimes unit has received calls about individuals trying to scheme the public through a text message. The text consist of a warning, telling people their debit card has been deactivated; as a result, they need to call a number to get it re-activated.

Two numbers have appeared: 912-292-1872 and 847-868-5815. Once you call the number the subject will ask for your debit card number. This is mostly affecting customers of credit unions. Real banks or credit unions WILL NOT contact you in his manner for this reason.

If you are contacted by one of these numbers do not respond. If you have already responded, call your financial institution and report the incident.
