SAVANNAH, GA (September 4, 2013): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police, along with traffic enforcement agencies throughout the region, joined forces on the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s 22nd Annual ‘Hands Across the Border’ DUI enforcement campaign, which resulted in issuance of several dozen citations at the Chatham and Jasper County, South Carolina line during Labor Day weekend.
Last Friday, SCMPD’s Traffic Unit, Georgia State Patrol, Hardeeville Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and several other nearby agencies collaborated in issuing 37 citations for various traffic-related offenses. The agencies set up roadside sobriety checkpoints at the northern foot of the Savannah’s Talmadge Bridge to snag drivers exceeding the national blood alcohol content limit of .08.
During Labor Day weekend for the last two decades, Georgia law enforcement agencies partnered with law enforcement in the bordering states of Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee to arrest impaired drivers entering and exiting the Peach State. Participating agencies in Georgia’s Southeast Traffic Enforcement Network (SETEN) include: Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Chatham, Effingham, Evans and Screven Counties.
While drunk drivers are the focus of ‘Hands Across the Border,’ the operation also targets drug offenders, fugitives, persons with warrants, improperly restrained children, unlicensed and uninsured drivers.
