SAVANNAH,GA ( March 30, 2011) Savannah Chatham Metro Police are investigating several Craig’s list scams. The SCMPD Financial Crimes Unit has received reports of five scams involving checks. There are several ways thieves will try to get your money. Here are a couple detectives have had reported to them:
Job scams – there is a listing on Craig’s list looking for a driver for an elderly family member. Once you provide the services, or even before, they pay you with a check. The check will be for too much money and they will ask you to forward the overage to another location. It’s a scam.
Automobile purchases – you find a vehicle on Craig’s list to purchase. You pay the seller with a check. You never receive your car. Weeks later your car will be for sale by another seller who is ready to scam another victim.
Detectives advise that most of the time when someone is trying to scam you most or all of the correspondence will be by email. Anytime someone overpays you, beware.
