SAVANNAH, GA (March 20, 2012) Police seek a kidnapping suspect after a child is abducted in a vehicle hijacking.
Just after 2:00 p.m., Patricia Pacheco was in the process of checking her mail at Edgewater Trace Apartments, located in the 10000 Block of Abercorn Street when she saw a man jump into her vehicle and speed away. Pacheco’s young granddaughter was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle.
At this same time two Army Soldiers from Hunter Army Air Field, were driving into the complex and witnessed a vehicle speeding by. They stated they heard Pacheco crying out and attempted to assist her. She told them that her granddaughter had been taken. The soldiers, Joshua Layton, 34, and Bryan Scott, 24, turned their vehicle around and attempted to see where the suspect went.
The suspect, described as a black male, 6’1″, dark complexion, dark colored shorts, white t-shirt and a camouflaged jacket had crossed White Bluff Road and entered Turtle Creek Apartments. He had taken the child out of the car and left her and had started walking in a different direction.
The soldiers were not far behind. Specialist Scott grabbed the baby and took her to safety. Specialist Layton continued to follow the suspect from a distance and disseminate information to police as it was happening. The suspect realized he was being followed and fled. Specialist Layton chased him until he finally lost sight of him.
The child was returned to her grandmother, unharmed. Police deployed Eagle one, K-9, and extra units from all over the city to attempt to apprehend the suspect. He is still at large.
