SAVANNAH, GA (October 26, 2011): Residents and visitors to many areas of Savannah may find themselves challenged to find parking spaces the first weekend in November as Savannah prepares for inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & Half-Marathon..
The 26.2-mile Marathon and 13.1-mile Half Marathon begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, but Savannah-Chatham Metro Police will have to begin closing parking areas as early as Wednesday morning, Nov. 2, to prepare for it. Race organizers will begin posting signs on restricted areas during the week before the race. and will perform a courtesy notice distribution project the Saturday prior (Oct. 29).
Some 23,000 runners have registered for the first annual event in Savannah, more than enough to overpower some of the streets on the course. And, some side streets have been included in the festivities, complicating the issue even further. To assure the safety of the runners, automobiles parked in those areas after midnight Friday will be towed to various towing companies.
The race begins on Bay Street at Bull heading west and doubles back several times through Downtown, Midtown and Southside before ending at Forsyth Park. The sheer numbers of runners and those accompanying them to the starting area are enough to overwhelm parking in the Downtown area. Adding to the complexity is that some of the city parking garages will be inaccessible. It could be challenging to those who live and work in the area.
Particularly affected will be parking in the areas around Forsyth Park including Park Avenue and Bull, Duffy, Gaston and Drayton streets. Parking will not be allowed on the north side of Park Avenue between Bull and Drayton beginning Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 a.m. as organizers prepare for the Finish Line Festival in the park. Both sides of Park Avenue will be closed between Drayton Street and Abercorn from 7 a.m. Friday. Parking on those streets will remain closed until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Parking on the east side of Bull Street between Bay Street and Bay Lane will be closed from 7 a.m. Thursday until 11 a.m. Saturday. The other side will be closed from 8 a.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday.
Automobiles parked on and around the course face towing if they are not removed by midnight Friday. Normal parking will be reinstated on a rolling basis beginning about 10 a.m. but some areas may not be reinstated until as late as 4 p.m.
While “No Parking” signs will be posted along the course, drivers who forget and find their cars moved will need to go to police headquarters on Habersham at Oglethorpe streets to learn where their vehicle has been towed. They can retrieve their vehicles from the towing company. Drivers who have their cars towed will face a $111 towing fee, along with potential storage charges after 72 hours.
A list of restricted parking areas and the times they will be closed is attached, along with a sample of the signs being posted by organizers.
To address parking issues, organizers have arranged for pay shuttle services from and to Tybee Island and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport as well as a free shuttle for Marathon participants only from Savannah Mall. Additional Southside/Midtown locations may be put in place and information will be released as it is available. Information on race-related parking and shuttles is available at the following website: http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/2011/10/savannah/parking-shuttles-2_20015.
