SAVANNAH, GA (June 13, 2017) –  On Friday the Thunder Task Force came together in Savannah to write 332 citations and 120 warnings to drivers violating traffic laws.

Friday’s operation resulted in one drug arrest, one felony arrest, the apprehension of two fugitives and four other arrests. Similar to recent Operation Thunder events in Savannah, seat belt violations were the most common offense. Officers issued 145 citations and 31 warnings for seat belts as well as 35 citations and three warnings for child seat violations.

Another 41 citations and 21 warnings were issued for speeding. Three citations were issued for driving under the iinfluence and 10 were issued for distracted driving.

Operation Rolling Thunder kicked off in Savannah in May. It is the third time the high-visibility program, which is sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, has assisted Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department with its mission to reduce fatalities and serious injuries from traffic crashes.

Since May, the operation has conducted a total of 32 checkpoints that have resulted in 144 impaired drivers being removed from behind the wheel. There have been a total of 56 drug arrests, 20 felony arrests and the arrest of 13 fugitives. Another 80 were arrested for other offenses.

A road check conducted late Friday ran jointly with the annual Hands Across the Border awareness campaign. Hands Across the Border, another Governor’s Office of Highway Safety campaign, is held at the beginning of each summer travel season and brings Georgia law enforcement together with law enforcement from neighboring states to collectively enforce traffic laws. The events are held in border cities like Savannah. Friday’s event brought about 200 officers to Savannah to assist in the joint Hands Across the Border-Operation Thunder checkpoint near the state line.

Operation Thunder will continue in Savannah through the summer.
