Train-semi collision July 1

SAVANNAH, GA (July 1, 2011): Bourne Avenue and Augusta Avenue intersection was closed for several hours after an accident involving a train and a semi-truck.

Witnesses reported to police that the driver of the semi-truck went around closed rail-road arms to go through the rail-road crossing. The semi-truck was struck in the trailer, causing it to twist and spin around in the intersection.

It took the train nearly a half a mile to come to a stop after striking the trailer. Only minor injuries were reported from the impact. Several agencies responded to assist SCMPD with the accident: Southside EMS, Port Wentworth Fire, GSP, Garden City PD, and Railroad PD.

The driver was charged with failure to yield at a rail road crossing.
