SAVANNAH, GA (September 27, 2010): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police have one man in custody after a brief pursuit.

At 11:45 a.m., a Southside officer on patrol in the Paradise Park area noticed a black Mustang driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed. The officer activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle, when the vehicle fled southbound on Whitebluff Road.  That officer lost sight of the vehicle but residents in the neighborhood spotted the car and pointed police in the right direction.

A second Southside officer who was responding to the area observed the suspect vehicle at Paradise Drive and Whitebluff Road, traveling at a high rate of speed and began to follow him at a distance, when the Mustang  ran a red light, narrowly missing another car. The driver lost control, and rolled over into a canal on the right of the roadway between Windsor Road and Holland Drive.

The officers extracted the subject from the vehicle.  Zachary MAXWELL, 22, was transported to Memorial Hospital.  MAXWELL was arrested and will be charged with fleeing to elude, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. MAXWELL also has an active warrant for his arrest out of Jefferson County.
