SAVANNAH, GA (Thursday, August 24, 2017) – The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department urges the community to take proper security measures when riding their bicycles in the area.
Bicycles that are improperly secured or not secured at all pose the risk of being stolen. Throughout Savannah-Chatham County, 10 bicycle thefts were reported from Aug. 6 through Aug. 24. Out of those 10, six bicycles were left unsecured.
SCMPD offers free bicycle registration at each precinct. Bicycle registration assists in locating and returning a bicycle to the owner if it is lost or stolen. Registering the correct information is one of the most important steps to recovering a stolen bicycle. Make sure to be as descriptive as possible when filling out the bicycle registration form. You can download the form here and take it to your local precinct.
Here are a few tips on how to protect your bicycle:
- Always secure your bicycle.
- Use designated parking areas where possible.
- Make sure the locks go through the bicycle frame as well as both wheels and the post you are securing it to.
- When possible, the best way to secure your bicycle is to take it indoors. A secure bike is out of sight!
