SAVANNAH, GA (August 8, 2011): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police have identified the woman who drowned after falling into the Savannah River July 21 as a 66-year-old woman from Ghana.
Victoria Owiredu who previously had an Atlanta address was identified by detectives using an identification card from a purse found in the area after she was pulled from the river by Savannah Fire Department. Police suspected her identity but were unable to confirm it until contacting a foster daughter. The woman apparently had no other relatives in the United States.
Witnesses reported the woman walk to the railing along the river, bent over it and fell into the water. They tried to throw a life preserver to her, but she did not respond.
