SAVANNAH, GA (September 23, 2011): The body found in the West 38th Street lane last Friday has been identified as Akeem Laurel, a 27-year-old Savannah man.
Laurel was known in the area by nicknames Kionna and New York. His body was noticed by a passerby about 4:30 a.m. and reported to police who were investigating a shooting death three blocks away in a rooming house in the 300 block of West 41st Street.
In that homicide, Anthony Bernard Morris, 44, was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Sidon Antone James, 20. The two men were known to each other and the shooting followed an altercation between them.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police so far have not connected the two crimes other than timing and general location. An autopsy has been performed on Laurel but the results have not been released.
