SAVANNAH, GA (December 6, 2021) –Georgia State Patrol is investigating a hit and run crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on Liberty Street Dec. 5, which occurred after SPD officers witnessed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed.
Around 9:30 p.m. officers observed a Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed on E. Broad Street at Oglethorpe Avenue. An officer initiated a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to stop. Due to safety factors and in accordance with SPD Pursuit Policy, the officer turned off his emergency equipment at Habersham Street and discontinued their attempt to conduct this traffic stop. The officer then requested dispatch advise other officers of information on the suspect vehicle over the radio.
Shortly after information on this vehicle was broadcast, the vehicle was involved in a pedestrian-involved crash at Liberty and Bull Street that resulted in the death of one pedestrian and the injury of another. Georgia State Patrol is the primary investigating agency for the fatal crash.
Department supervisors confirmed that there was no active vehicle pursuit when the crash occurred.
