SAVANNAH, GA (October 25, 2010): The president of the Hodge Elementary PTA has been charged with two counts of theft by taking after depleting the organization’s bank account by writing checks to herself.
Det. S. Cpl. R.J. Woodberry of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Financial Crimes Division said Thomasina Smith, 55, of the 2300 block of Harden Street, admitted taking money from the PTA and money.belonging to World’s Finest Chocolate
Ms. Smith, in her capacity as President, Smith had signature authority to issue checks on the account. Det. Woodberry said between February 3 and May 4, she embezzled $7,719.41 by writing checks to herself and cashing them at various SunTrust Bank locations.
Det. Woodberry said $4,387 was to have gone to Worlds Finest Chocolate as payment for fundraising candy sold by the students of the school. The balance, $3,357.66 was deposited by Smith into the PTA account. Ms. Smith depleted the account through checks to herself.
