SAVANNAH, GA (September 16, 2013): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will unofficially open a small sub-station downtown Friday, compliments of City Market at 3 p.m. Friday.
City Market contributed the 1,200-square foot, second-story office for the sub-station. The Savannah College of Art and Design has loaned artwork to decorate the interior walls.
The sub-station will be used for as needed working space for officers patrolling the area around City Market and as a base of operations for a special assignment squad that patrols the entertainment area on Thursday-Sunday nights when businesses serving alcoholic beverages are busiest.
Downtown Precinct commander, Capt. Mike Wilkins, said the loft office provides helpful views of both the City Market courtyard on St. Julian Street and across West Congress Street to the walk up window on a busy McDonalds at West Broughton and Jefferson streets.
Police Chief Willie Lovett praised City Market and SCAD for support of patrols in the area: “Support such as this increases our ability to protect one of our busiest areas and we appreciate it.”
