SAVANNAH, GA (November 19, 2012) Eight circus animals escaped serious injury today when the trailer in which they were being transported dislodged from the truck pulling it and overturned on Interstate 516.
The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for more than five hours after the 4 p.m. accident between the exit and entrance ramps to Veterans Parkway.
Michael K. Ramos of Riverview, FL., was charged by Metro police with driving too fast for conditions and failure to maintain the lane of traffic. Georgia State Troopers also charged him with having an improper class license. The Kenworth truck he was driving first struck a sign and guard rail on the right side of the highway, dislodging the trailer and then coming to a rest on top of the guard rail.
Southside EMS technicians treated the nose of one llama and the foot of another. They, along with two zebras, two ponies and two camels, were transferred to another trailer after Savannah Fire firefighters removed sections of retaining walls to free the animals.
