SAVANNAH, GA (February 20, 2015): Intervention by a Metro detective and good Samaritan helped prevent an early afternoon kidnapping on Savannah’s west side, as Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police continue searching for the suspect.

At 12:48 p.m. today, while driving near Gwinnett and West Boundary streets, a Downtown Precinct detective observed a male suspect forcing a female into a white van. The detective observed injuries on the female, who escaped to a bystander’s vehicle, as the suspect entered the van’s driver’s seat. The suspect fled when the detective attempted to stop him.

The victim was transported to Candler Hospital for treatment.

Simultaneously, a brief pursuit ensued from the Interstate 16 ramp to Interstate 516. The pursuit ended due to the suspect’s erratic driving. The suspect was last seen driving north on Interstate 95 in a 2004 Honda Odyssey .

The suspect, Larry Bennett, 37, is a heavy set black male. He is clean shaven with a low haircut. Bennett frequents Union Mission.

Bennett now has warrants for attempted kidnapping, theft by taking and battery.
