SAVANNAH, GA (August 30, 2012) Two bicycle events with as many as 1,700 riders combined are scheduled in Savannah this weekend but Metro Police plan no long-term street closures.
Saturday’s 2012 Midnight Garden Ride and Sunday’s People Pedal ride will consist of groups of cyclists riding together led and followed by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police. Both are annual events.
Streets and intersections will be closed only for the few minutes the cyclists are riding through. Those unable to keep up will leave the rides.
The Saturday ride is organized by the Savannah Bicycle Campaign and expects between 500 and 700 bicyclists. It begins at 8 p.m. at Telfair Square with a 9.9-mile ride to Daffin Park and back for a concert on Telfair Square.
Sunday’s People Pedal ride is expected to include as many as 1,000 cyclists on two routes, both starting at MLK Boulevard and Liberty Street. Participants are to begin convening at 416 W. Liberty at 6 a.m.
The 37.2-mile road ride begins at 8 a.m., traveling across the Talmadge Bridge into South Carolina and back via the Houlihan Bridge . A smaller group will leave at 8:30 a.m. for the 24.8-mile ride to Isle of Hope and back.
