SAVANNAH, GA. (April 1, 2019): Applications are now being accepted for enrollment in the SPD Police Athletic Activities League (PAAL) Youth Summer Camp.
The camp is free and for children ages 8-14. The initiative is designed to provide youth with a fun and safe environment for the summer as well as inspire them to strive to go to college. All City of Savannah children, meeting the age requirement, are invited to apply.
Campers will learn skills in character building, goal setting, decision making, crime reporting, web safety, self-defense and much more. Learning strategies will include guest speakers, field trips and hands-on activities. Campers will also be exposed to many aspects of college life with the support of Savannah State University.
There will be two one-week camps for boys and two one-week camps for girls:
June 3-7 Boys
June 10-14 Girls
June 17-21 Boys
June 24-28 Girls
The camps will take place at Savannah State University’s Police Headquarters. Each camp will run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Beginning at 8 a.m., camp participants may be dropped off at SSU Police Headquarters at 3219 College Street, in the Hubert C Building. Lunch will be provided at no cost to families.
The application deadline is May 1 at 5 p.m. At that time, the application process will begin to make the selection of children accepted into the camp. There will be 25 participants accepted per camp week. Applications are available for pickup and return at police headquarters and all precincts.
Savannah Police Department’s Juvenile Officers Unit launched the camp in 2014 under the direction of Major Richard Zapal (retired) to develop rapport between youth and the law enforcement community early in life. It is now overseen by Lt. Michael McPhaul.
