SAVANNAH, GA (September 3, 2011): Police have arrested one victim and are putting together the pieces on what appears to be a shootout in West Savannah that left two men shot and two houses damaged in two different cities this morning.
Brandon Williams, 23, of Garden City, and Quinton Butterfield, 27, of Savannah, each were transported to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries after the incidents that began about 1:20 a.m. Neither victim was willing to provide information on their attackers or others who may have been in the area.
Butterfield was found shot in the foot at 1420 Richards Street near West Street behind Sustainable Fellwood Homes. Butterfield said he was walking near West street when a car drove by and shots were fired at him. Police also found gunshot damage to a house in the 100 block of West Street. Two women in the house escaped injury. Police later confirmed he was sitting on a porch when he was hit.
Williams was found shot in the arm in a car that Garden City Police stopped for driving with a flat tire at a high rate of speed. He underwent surgery for the injury and then was charged with aggravated assault and placed under armed guard in the hospital Saturday afternoon.
Garden City Police had advised Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police that they had stopped the speeding Toyota at 6th Street and DeLettre Avenue in Garden City with three men in it. Two of the men ran and escaped but the third, Williams, was found in the car with a gunshot wound. Two guns were found in the Toyota and Garden City Police found a house on 3rd St. in Garden City with gunshot damage to the exterior.
Williams told SCMPD Violent Crimes investigators he was walking down Bay Street when some black males began to chase and shoot at him. He said the green Toyota driven by someone he knew from Garden City pulled up after he was shot and he was able to climb in to escape. He denied being near the Richards Street shooting. Police, however, quickly were able to place the green Toyota there at the time of the shooting.
Metro detectives on Saturday confered with the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) about Williams’ involvement and learned that CNT had an active investigation on him . CNT officers suspended their investigation and secured a search warrant for his residence. CNT, Metro, Garden City and Chatham County Sherrrif’s Department officers searched the house Saturday afternoon and secured items.
