SAVANNAH, GA (May 10, 2016): At Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s request, Georgia State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle collision on President Street at General McIntosh Boulevard. The collision claimed the lives of Jamal Johnson, 29, and Vantorio Sanders, 31, both of Savannah, on May 10.
At approximately 3 a.m. Metro officers patrolling the area near Mississippi and Treat avenues observed a Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed. With lights and sirens activated, marked SCMPD patrol units attempted a traffic stop at Pennsylvania Avenue and Hawthorne Street. The driver did not stop. Metro units deactivated their emergency equipment near Savannah Golf Club Drive and President Street and continued to follow the vehicle at a distance.
The Altima continued West on President Street. Metro units also continued west on President Street near Truman Parkway. West of the Truman Parkway on President Street the Altima crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer.
Johnson and Sanders died at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver reported no injuries, but was transported by ambulance to the hospital for observation.
In order to provide transparency in this investigation, the on-duty commander requested the Georgia State Patrol to investigate. This collision remains under investigation by GSP.
