SAVANNAH, GA (July 11, 2011): Police seized more than 1,000 items and arrested a man and a woman Saturday in an investigation on counterfeit merchandize at Keller’s Flea Market.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Sgt. George Gundich said more than 35 officers, working with a representative of various companies, fanned out over the expansive flea market about 11:30 a.m., shutting down 10 booths simultaneously.
Charged with Forged or reproduction or sale of counterfeit trademark merchandise were Christopher Babatunde Salami, 34, of Palm Coast, FL., and Amal Abdel Hassan, 36, of Ormond Beach, FL. Other arrests could follow.
Most items were seized from the booths themselves.
While the flea market itself remained open, the investigation created some disruption. Some shoppers left the area, leaving bags of merchandise behind, including items that were legally purchased. Police contacted the owners to retrieve those items.
Seized were purses, cell phone covers sunglasses and items with Disney, Marvel or Warner Brothers labels.
The items are being warehoused in the area until the investigation is completed and they then will be destroyed.
